Decision guide
Vane vs Perplexity
Both products aim to answer questions with source links. The deciding difference is who operates the search stack: you configure and maintain Vane; Perplexity runs its hosted service for you.
Feature comparison from each product's published pages, checked October 22, 2026. We have not measured answer quality, speed, or cost on a matched set of questions.
The practical differences
| Question | Vane | Perplexity |
|---|---|---|
| Who hosts it? | You run the open-source application. | You use a hosted service. |
| What powers search? | The official Docker image bundles SearXNG. | Perplexity operates its own web answer service. |
| Can you choose a local model? | Vane supports Ollama. | Its standard product is a hosted experience. |
| Who maintains it? | You handle setup, updates, and availability. | Perplexity runs the service. |
| Are answers sourced? | The project describes cited answers. | Perplexity describes cited answers. |
Privacy and cost boundaries
Self-hosting Vane gives you control over its application and data storage. It does not make a live web search completely offline: SearXNG queries upstream engines, and a cloud model receives data sent to that provider. With a local Ollama model, model inference can stay on your machine. The software itself is open source, but hardware, electricity, VPS hosting, and any paid model API remain possible costs. See the self-hosting cost guide.
Which should you choose?
Choose Vane if controlling the stack and model choice matter enough to justify installation and maintenance. Choose Perplexity if you want to start asking questions without running a search service yourself. For research quality, inspect citations and run matched questions; this guide does not claim that either product answers more accurately.
A fair test to run yourself
Use the same five questions in both products. Record the date, Vane model, search mode, answer time, number of working source links, and whether each answer is supported by its sources. Do not infer a universal winner from one query or an unmatched model setup.
Begin with the Docker installation guide, then connect a model using the Ollama guide.
