Vane vs Perplexica: same project, new name
Vane is the new name for Perplexica, not a competing fork. The official Vane README states the former name. If a guide still says “Perplexica,” check its commands and configuration against today's official Vane repository before using it.
Identity and current installation source checked October 22, 2026. We have not performed a migration from an older Perplexica installation.
What changed?
The project is now presented as Vane. Older articles, screenshots, image names, and repository references can still use Perplexica. The name alone does not tell you whether an old command is compatible with the current release. Treat an old guide as historical context and verify its operational steps in the current repository.
Four checks for an older guide
- Repository: follow the maintainer's current Vane repository for active installation and troubleshooting instructions.
- Docker image: compare the image name and tag in the old guide with the current installation section. The current bundled-image example there uses
itzcrazykns1337/vane:latest. - Data and settings: check the current volume mapping and the project's update instructions before replacing a working container. Back up data you cannot afford to lose.
- Model and search setup: inspect current Ollama, provider, and SearXNG instructions. An older screenshot may describe a different setup flow.
Already running Perplexica?
Record your current image, container configuration, volumes, and application version first. Then read the latest release notes and update guide for any migration requirements. A fresh Vane Docker command is an installation example, not a blanket migration procedure for every old deployment. Preserve a backup and verify search, model access, and citations after any update.
Do not confuse Perplexica with Perplexity AI
Perplexica was the earlier name of the open-source project now called Vane. Perplexity AI is a separate hosted product. Our Vane vs Perplexity guide compares how those two approaches differ; the Vane explainer covers the project's architecture.
