Free self-hosted Perplexity alternatives

Yes: you can run open-source alternatives without buying a Perplexity subscription. A Vane plus Ollama setup can avoid a paid model API, but still uses your computer, electricity, storage, and internet access. A VPS or cloud LLM adds separate charges.

Cost framework based on published product options, checked October 22, 2026. No universal dollar figure is claimed; prices depend on location, hardware, usage, provider, and date.

What “free” means

There are at least four different costs: the software license, the machine running the app, the AI model, and the search or retrieval service. A zero-price software download does not make the whole installation costless. Read each project's license and provider terms before using it commercially or offering it to others.

Typical components, not a quote or measured monthly total.
SetupSoftware / model pathCosts to account for
Vane + Ollama on an existing PCSelf-host Vane and run model inference locally.Existing hardware, electricity, disk, bandwidth, and maintenance; live web search still contacts outside sources.
Vane + cloud modelHost the app yourself; pay the model provider as used.Host or PC plus API usage and any provider charges.
Morphic + local modelIts repository documents Ollama and a Docker Compose stack.Compute and storage for Morphic's services, plus maintenance.
Open WebUI + Ollama + search providerBroader AI interface with separately configured web search.Host and model resources; search provider may have its own terms or fees.
SearXNG aloneMetasearch results, without an answer-generating model.Host and bandwidth, but it is not a full answer-engine substitute.

A simple cost calculation

For an existing home PC, estimate incremental electricity + any new hardware + model/API fees + paid search fees. For a VPS, add monthly instance + persistent storage + bandwidth. Record how many questions you expect to ask and the provider's current billing unit before comparing totals. The value of your own setup and update time matters too, even if no invoice records it.

Local model does not mean offline search

Ollama can keep inference on your machine, while a live question still requires web retrieval unless you disable it. Vane's bundled SearXNG retrieves from upstream search engines. A cloud model can receive question and retrieved context according to that provider's terms. Trace your full query path when privacy is the reason you self-host.

A practical starting path

  1. Check whether your current computer can run a model you find usable.
  2. Read the Vane Docker guide and Ollama connection guide.
  3. Test one complete question and open its citations.
  4. Only then compare a VPS or paid API using your actual question volume.

If your need is broader than Vane, see the seven-tool comparison.
